Myths & Facts
MYTH: I want my dog to have a least one litter of puppies.
FACT: Every litter counts and contributes to millions of pets being killed each year in the U.S. Medical research shows that females spayed before their first heat have much lower rates of uterine infections and reproductive cancers. Most females have their first heat cycle by six months of age. Males neutered by six months old have a reduced risk of developing testicular cancer. One female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 dogs in just 6 years.
MYTH: My dog is purebred.
FACT: So is at least one out of every four pets brought to animal shelters around the country. About half of all animals entering shelters are euthanized.
MYTH: It will change my dog’s personality.
FACT: A dog’s personality is formed more by genetics and environment than by sex hormones. A neutered male will be better behaved. Neutered dogs focus their attention on their human families. Unaltered dogs may be inclined to mark all over the house. Many aggression problems can be avoided by early neutering.
MYTH: I don’t want my male dog to feel like less of a male.
FACT: Dogs do not have any concept of sexual identity. He won’t suffer any kind of emotional reaction or identity crisis when neutered. An intact male will do just about anything to mate! This includes digging, jumping and scaling fences or walls to escape his home or enter the yard of a female in heat. Roaming dogs are not only at risk of being hit by cars and fighting with other competing males. The majority of dog bites to postal carriers and almost all of fatal dog attacks are from unaltered male dogs.
MYTH: But my dog is so (insert glowing description), I want another just like her/him.
FACT: Your dog’s puppies or kittens have an It is highly unlikely that your dog’s pups will be a carbon copy of your pet. Even professional breeders cannot make this guarantee. There is an overwhelming number of shelter pets who are just as (insert glowing description) waiting for good homes.
MYTH: It’s expensive to have my pet spayed or neutered.

MYTH: I’ll find good homes for all the puppies.
FACT: You may find homes for your pet’s puppies. But you can only control what decisions you make with your own pet, not the decisions other people make with theirs. Your pet’s puppies, or their puppies, could end up in an animal shelter, as one of the many homeless pets in every community competing for a home. Will they be one of the lucky ones?
